Learning Activities
As a class, the first four chapters of Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan will be read.
Reading: Activity 1: Students record answers to questions using Tape a Talk about the first four chapters. This will be a teacher facilitated group discussion (3-4 students to a group).
Activity 2: Students will record themselves reading page X from the book. The students will then go back and listen to what they have recorded and make notes of where they made mistakes. The student will record again, hopefully improving their rate and fluency.
Social Studies: Activity 1: Students will use the Google Lit Trips and Identify the location of the main character travels on Google Earth. Students will use a travel log to mark the location and factual information from each stop on the trip.
Activity 2: Research what an Orphan Train is and how it changed the lives of the children. Students will use a teacher created web-page with guided questions to assist them with researching using online sources. This in an example of an __Orphan Train Webquest__ that was designed for 5th grade.
Writing: Activity 1: As the students read the first four chapters they will be learning the meaning of several new words. Students will use a __word list__ and complete a __vocabulary table__ as they read.
Activity 2: Students will use vocabulary from chapters one through four to practice writing sentences. Students will use the StoryKit application to showcase the vocabulary word, a picture and a sentence that uses it correctly. Students will work in teams of four. Each student will be assigned six of the twenty-four words to complete the StoryKit assignment. Once the group has finished they will be able to share what they have created to help quiz each other.
Activity 3: Students will write an opinion piece pretending that they are Vern. In this opinion piece, students will write about what they might name a horse from the stable and why.
Science: Activity 1: Two students start from the same position on one side of the classroom. One student takes giant-steps and the other takes baby-steps. Have each student takes one step per second. Discuss who gets to the other side of the classroom first? How many steps did each person have to take to get to the other side of the room?
Activity 2: One student starts behind the other on the same side of the classroom, both walking with equal stride and pace.Have each student takes one step per second. Discuss who got to the other side of the classroom first? How many steps did each person take? Predict what would happen if some student changed the length of his/her stride.
Activity 4: Discuss how this would apply to horses and racing horses.
Integration of App/Tool
1. Tape a Talk: In ELA, students will use Tape a Talk to practice and monitor fluency as well as record a discussion. 2. Google Lit Trips: Will be used to bring up Google Earth and to learn more about the places visited throughout the story. 3. StoryKit: Students will use this App to build their vocabulary knowledge and share what they have created with their fellow classmates. 4. Educreations: This App will be used to demonstrate knowledge of the Orphan Train. Students will use pictures, audio and text to take us on the journey. 5. Google Earth: This application will be used in conjunction with Google Lit Trips in order to show students the location of the settings in the story.
Collaboration
ELA: Students will be put into small groups discuss questions from Riding Freedom. Writing: Students will share their storykit products in pairs to review the words. The students will also share their opinion writing assignments in small groups. SS: Students will work in teams of two - three in order to research and create their presentations using Educreations Science: Students will work with a partner to see how step size and amount of steps impacts travel time.
